Fifth Grade Students Create Clouds in a Bottle

Ellicott students create clouds in a bottle.

Ellicott 5th grade students recently took part in an exciting hands-on activity designed to deepen their understanding of weather variables and the water cycle.
Using simple materials including a plastic bottle, a small amount of water, and a smoke particle from a lit match, students explored how changes in pressure and temperature can cause water vapor to condense into a visible cloud. By squeezing the bottle, they increased air pressure and temperature inside. Releasing the pressure then allowed the water vapor to quickly cool and condense, forming a cloud before their eyes.
Throughout the investigation, students observed how clouds form and dissipate in the atmosphere, connecting the experiment directly to real world weather processes. The activity strengthened their understanding of key scientific concepts such as condensation, air pressure, temperature changes, and the water cycle.
